Serc (betahistine) is a type of medicine called a histamine-analogue.It is thought to work by helping the blood flow in your inner ear, which lowers the buildup of pressure. It is this buildup of pressure in the ear which is thought to cause feelings of dizziness (vertigo), feelings of being sick (nausea and vomiting), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss or hearing difficulty suffered by people with Ménière’s disease.Serc (betahistine) may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

How should you take Serc (betahistine)? 

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.

It is recommended to take your dose at about the same time every day.

This medicine can be taken with or without food. If this medicine causes upset stomach, take it with meals.

The usual dose is 24 – 48 mg daily in divided doses (12 mg to 24 mg twice a day, or 8 mg to 16 mg three times a day).

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it and then take the next dose at the right time.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

Who should not take Serc (betahistine)?

Do not take if Serc (betahistine):

  • you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Serc (betahistine) dihydrochloride or to any of the non-medicinal ingredients in the product.

  • you have a peptic (stomach) ulcer or have a history of this condition.

  • your doctor has told you that you have an adrenal gland tumour (called phaeochromocytoma).

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Serc (betahistine)? 

Tell your doctor if you:

  • have or have had health problems in the past.

  • suffer from bronchial asthma,

  • have liver problems.

  • are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • are less than 18 years old.

What are the possible side effects of Serc (betahistine)? 

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.

Common side effects may include:

  • skin rashes and itching

  • stomach pain

  • nausea, vomiting

  • bloating, indigestion

  • headache

What other drugs interact with Serc (betahistine)? 

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:

  • antihistamines;

  • beta-2 agonists (e.g., salbutamol, salmeterol, fenoterol, formoterol) and

  • monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
