 Brand Names

  1. Flovent Diskus
  2. Flovent HFA

Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that works directly in the lungs to make breathing easier by reducing the swelling and inflammation of the airways. When the inflammation has gone, your airways are much less likely to become narrow and cause symptoms such as wheezing.

This medication must be used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma, bronchitis, or some types of emphysema.

This medication does not work immediately and therefore will not help treat sudden wheezing attacks. A different medication is used to treat this; so if you have more than one medication, be careful not to confuse them.

Fluticasone is available on its own in an inhaler, and also in combination with other medicines, such as salmeterol, formoterol or vilanterol. These are medicines which also help to control the symptoms of asthma.

Fluticasone inhalation may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Fluticasone (for inhalation) is sold under these US brand names:

  • Arnuity Ellipta
  • Flovent
  • Flovent Diskus
  • Flovent HFA
  • Flovent Rotadisk

Aerosol for inhalation (Flovent HFA)

  • Flovent 44mcg / actuation (equivalent to 50mcg outside of the United States)
  • Flovent 110mcg / actuation (equivalent to 125mcg outside of the United States)
  • Flovent 220mcg / actuation (equivalent to 250mcg outside of the United States)

Powder for inhalation (Flovent Diskus)

  • Flovent Diskus 50mcg / actuation
  • Flovent Diskus 100mcg / actuation
  • Flovent Diskus 250mcg / actuation

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.

When using Flovent Inhaler HFA, shake the canister well before using. Follow the instructions for test sprays in the air if you are using a canister for the first time or if you have not used it for a week or more. Avoid spraying the medication in your eyes. A fine mist is a sign that the inhaler is properly working. Follow the detailed instructions for proper use of the inhaler and cleaning of the mouthpiece.

Inhale this medication by mouth usually twice a day or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

It is recommended that you use a spacer device with this medication.

If two inhalations/puffs are prescribed, wait at least one minute between them. If you are using other inhalers at the same time, wait several minutes between the use of each medication, and use this drug (the corticosteroid) last.

Flovent Diskus is a powder form of fluticasone that come with a special inhaler device preloaded with blister packs containing measured doses of fluticasone. The device opens and loads a blister of fluticasone each time you use the inhaler. The powder is inhaled using the force of your own breath.  Follow the instructions for using the device and cleaning.

To prevent dry mouth, hoarseness and oral yeast infections from developing, gargle and rinse your mouth after each use. Do not swallow the rinse solution.

Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. This medication works best if used consistently at even intervals. Remember to use it at the same times each day.

Do not increase your dose, use this more frequently, or stop using this medication without first consulting your doctor.

It may take up to 2 weeks or longer before the full benefit of this drug takes effect. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Keep track of the number of inhalations used from each canister. Discard the canister after you have used the number of inhalations specified on the manufacturer’s package.

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Store at room temperature; in a dry area.

Keep the powder forms in the unopened foil pouch or tray until ready to use. Throw away any unused medicine when the inhalations counter on your inhaler device shows “0.”

Store the Flovent HFA canister with the mouthpiece down. Keep the canister away from open flame or high heat, such as in a car on a hot day. The canister may explode if it gets too hot. Do not puncture or burn an empty inhaler canister.

You should not use fluticasone inhalation if you are allergic to fluticasone or any of the ingredients in Flovent HFA or Flovent Diskus.

Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections.

Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using steroid medicine.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • any type of infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal);
  • glaucoma or cataracts;
  • an infection caused by parasites (such as giardia, malaria, leishmaniasis, hookworm, pinworm, toxoplasmosis, and many others);
  • tuberculosis;
  • herpes infection of the eyes;
  • liver disease;
  • low bone mineral density; or
  • a weak immune system.

Long-term use of steroids may lead to bone loss (osteoporosis), especially if you smoke, if you do not exercise, if you do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet, or if you have a family history of osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor about your risk.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether fluticasone will harm an unborn baby. However, having untreated or uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy may cause complications such as low birth weight, premature birth, or eclampsia. The benefit of treating asthma may outweigh any risks to the baby.

It may not be safe to breast-feed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risk.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • weakness, tired feeling, nausea, vomiting, feeling like you might pass out;
  • wheezing, choking, or other breathing problems after using fluticasone inhalation;
  • blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
  • worsening of your asthma symptoms;
  • blood vessel inflammation–fever, cough, stomach pain, weight loss, skin rash, severe tingling, numbness, chest pain; or
  • liver problems–upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Common side effects may include:

  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, sinus pain;
  • low fever, cough, wheezing, chest tightness;
  • hoarseness or deepened voice;
  • white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
  • headache; or
  • nausea, vomiting, upset stomach.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:

  • an antibiotic;
  • antifungal medicine;
  • antiviral medicine to treat HIV or AIDS; or
  • steroid medicine.

This list is not complete. Other drugs may affect this medication, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Seek emergency medical attention.

Guide to How and When To Use Your Inhaler

Not all inhalers are made equal, nor are they made for the same purpose. A medical device used to release medication into an individual’s lungs, the inhaler is also known as a puffer or pump. It is often used to treat individuals with asthma.

What is the difference between Flixotide Inhaler™ and Flovent™?

When the inhaler delivers the medication, 50 mcg is delivered from the valve (upstream), but only 44 mcg from the actuator (mouth piece).  The actual amount delivered to the patient lungs is variable and depends on good inhalation technique.
