Generic Vagifem To Treat Menopausal Symptoms Now Available

News September 25, 2020 | CanadaOnlineHealth

Menopause can be a big shift in a woman’s life.

Sometimes it causes vaginal changes that can be bothersome to most, such as dryness, pain and bleeding during intercourse, soreness, itching, painful urination, or irritation.

In medical terms, this is known as ‘vaginal atrophy’. It is caused by a drop in the levels of estrogen in your body. This happens naturally after menopause.

The good news is that estradiol can treat some of these changes. However, not all estrogens are the same; there are several different forms of estrogens. Estradiol is the same estrogen that your body makes.

What Is Vagifem?

Vagifem ® (estradiol vaginal inserts) 10 mcg, a local vaginal estrogen therapy, is brand estradiol vaginal tablets manufactured by Novo Nordisk. This medication is used to treat menopausal changes in and around the vagina.

Vagifem belongs to a group of medications called vaginal Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Generic Vagifem is now available!

What Is Vagirux

Vagirux is licensed to relieve menopausal symptoms in the vagina due to estrogen deficiency. Each vaginal tablet contains 10 micrograms estradiol. The active ingredient, synthetic 17β-estradiol, same as in Vagifem, is chemically and biologically identical to endogenous human estradiol.

Vagirux may be used in women with or without an intact uterus.

How Vagirux Works

Vagirux works by replacing the estrogen ba  which is normally produced in the ovaries of women. It is inserted into your vagina, so the hormone is released where it is needed. This may relieve discomfort in the vagina.

How to Take Vagirux?

Vagirux is administered intravaginally as a local estrogen therapy by use of an applicator. This 10 mcg vaginal tablet comes in a box of 24 tablets with a multiple-use applicator sealed separately in foil.

Treatment may be started on any convenient day.

  • Initial dose: One vaginal tablet daily for two weeks.
  • Maintenance dose: One vaginal tablet twice a week.

Good to Know

  • Vaginal infections should be treated before start of the Vagirux therapy.
  • The applicator can be used up to 24 times. Thereafter, throw it away via the household waste. A new applicator should be used with every new pack.
  • The use of HRT carries risks which need to be considered when deciding whether to start taking it, or whether to carry on taking it.
